It’s unclear which positions and locations will be part of the layoffs, but CNBC reported that the job cuts are “in the thousands.” A spokesperson for Oracle notified SFGATE the company is declining to comment.
The cuts reportedly launched early Tuesday, with workers blindsided by abrupt email notices, according to Business Insider. The email, obtained by the outlet, pointed to company’s restructuring as the reason for the cuts.
“We are sharing some difficult news regarding your position,” the email read. “After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business requireds, we have built the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational modify. As a result, today is your last working day.”
The California Employment Development Department did not respond by publication time to SFGATE’s request for any Oracle WARN filings, which are generally required in the event of mass layoffs.
Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Oracle, headquartered in Austin, Texas, was preparing for mass layoffs as it sees to expand its AI power. According to the outlet, Oracle is planning to build new data centers to increase AI work for customers like OpenAI.
The reported layoffs come after another round already hit the company last year, cutting more than 200 jobs for workers in the Bay Area, particularly software developers.
Oracle also announced in March that its quarterly revenue is up by 22% and its quarterly net income totaled $3.7 billion.
