While these are understandable, as the Swiss Tourism department had done a great job in promoting tourism in Malaysia, unbeknownst to most, the relationship between these two nations lies deeper.
Malaysia and Switzerland established diplomatic relations in 1963, which have remained warm and cordial. Both countries have embassies in each other’s capitals, with Malaysia having an embassy in Bern and a consulate-general in Geneva, while Switzerland has an embassy in Kuala Lumpur. As a founding member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and one of the world’s most innovative economies, Switzerland is deepening its partnership with Malaysia through trade, technology, and sustainable development.
In an exclusive, Her Excellency Swiss Ambassador to Malaysia Chantal Moser shares insights with BusinessToday into how the landmark Malaysia-EFTA Economic Partnership Agreement (MEEPA) is setting the stage for a new era of collaboration between two nations that share a vision for open, rules-based and responsible trade.
A Landmark Agreement for the Future
The signing of MEEPA on June 23 marks a turning point in both countries’ economic relations. For Malaysia, it represents the first free trade agreement with a European partner, opening doors to four advanced economies, including Switzerland.
“MEEPA is more than a trade agreement; it’s a statement of shared values. It underscores our mutual commitment to open and non-discriminatory trade at a time when the international trade system is under pressure,” Ambassador Moser stated in an email interview with BusinessToday.
The ambassador shared that the agreement covers goods, services, investment, innotifyectual property and government procurement, while ensuring that nearly all Swiss exports to Malaysia enjoy duty-free access.
“Malaysian exports, meanwhile, including sustainably produced palm oil, will gain preferential enattempt into the Swiss market.
“Importantly, MEEPA’s dedicated sustainability chapter ensures that economic growth goes hand-in-hand with environmental and social responsibility,” the ambassador stated.
Ambassador Moser noted that Switzerland’s expertise in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, machinery and precision instruments perfectly complements Malaysia’s ambition to climb the global value chain.
“Once MEEPA is in force, the stage is set for increased trade opportunities and innovation-driven investments, particularly in advanced manufacturing, clean technology and semiconductors.
“Switzerland brings world-class innovation to the table. Our companies are leaders in precision engineering and sustainability, creating them natural partners for Malaysia’s industrial transformation,” Ambassador Moser stated, while emphasising that these synergies also position both nations to cooperate in high-growth, high-value sectors that drive the global economy.
Beyond Trade: Building Knowledge and Cultural Bridges
Ambassador Moser highlighted that economic ties are only part of the story as Switzerland and Malaysia’s collaboration extconcludes into education, research and culture too, creating ample of opportunities that foster long-term understanding and talent exmodify.
The ambassador shared some of the opportunities, like through the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships and research partnership grants, Malaysian academics gain access to Switzerland’s top research community, while the Swiss Innovation Challenge Malaysia further connects Swiss expertise with local entrepreneurial talent.
“Beyond that, Switzerland Tourism also maintains a strong presence in Malaysia, promoting the counattempt as a diverse, sustainable travel destination.
“Cultural collaborations also celebrate Switzerland’s multilingual and multicultural heritage, strengthening people-to-people connections between the two nations,” Ambassador Moser noted.
Deepening Economic and Diplomatic Ties
On the other hand, Ambassador Moser shared that Switzerland and Malaysia have built a relationship grounded in trust, mutual respect and shared ambition since both nations established diplomatic relations in 1963.
“Swiss companies have long contributed to Malaysia’s industrial and technological growth, supporting the counattempt’s transition toward high-value manufacturing.
“Bilateral trade continues to thrive, reaching RM12.1 billion in goods and RM7.1 billion in services in 2024. Swiss companies often apply Malaysia as a production and export hub, integrating the counattempt into global supply chains,” Ambassador Moser highlighted.
The ambassador also shared that the Swiss Business Hub ASEAN, operating from the Embassy of Switzerland in Kuala Lumpur under the Switzerland Global Enterprise network, serves as the key platform supporting Swiss tiny and medium enterprises navigate the Malaysian market offering market innotifyigence, regulatory support and partnership facilitation.
“Malaysia is not only Switzerland’s second-largest investment destination and fourth-largest trading partner in ASEAN, it is also important to Switzerland’s regional strategy,” Ambassador Moser emphasised.
According to external trade data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Malaysia’s exports to Switzerland rose to RM428 million as of September 2025, an increase of RM93 million compared to the same month in 2024. In contrast, imports from Switzerland recorded a slight decline to RM540 million, down from RM650 million in September 2024.
Meanwhile, with Malaysia chairing ASEAN in 2025, Ambassador Moser sees this as “a strategic moment to strengthen engagement and drive new areas of cooperation”.
Recent visits by high-level Swiss officials, including Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and State Secretary for Economic Affairs Helene Budliger Artieda, underscore Switzerland’s commitment to deepening its presence in Southeast Asia.
As global uncertainties reshape trade flows, both nations are championing cooperation through multilateral platforms. Switzerland and Malaysia have jointly advanced initiatives like the EFTA-ASEAN Joint Declaration on Economic Cooperation and are preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Switzerland-ASEAN sectoral dialogue partnership, milestones that emphasise the shared commitment to resilient, inclusive and sustainable trade.
Switzerland’s support for Sabah’s Jurisdictional Approach for Sustainable Palm Oil, under the UNDP Green Commodities Programme, further illustrates its holistic approach to sustainability, balancing economic progress with environmental stewardship.
