Stockholm Arlanda Airport has achieved a major milestone in European aviation by being the first airport in Europe to implement the new “Established on RNP” (EoR) arrival concept, an advanced air traffic approach technology designed to enhance operational efficiency, capacity, and environmental performance. The initiative, developed jointly by Swedavia and Luftfartsverket (LFV), positions Sweden at the forefront of sustainable air traffic modernization.
A New Era in Air Traffic Management
The Established on RNP (EoR) procedure enables aircraft to perform curved approaches utilizing advanced sanotifyite-based navigation. Unlike traditional straight-in landings, this method allows aircraft to align with the runway through a series of pre-defined arcs, which can shorten approach paths, reduce fuel burn, and optimize traffic flow during peak periods.
By applying EoR, incoming aircraft can follow flexible and shorter routes directly to Arlanda’s runways. This advancement not only enhances air traffic sequencing but also supports airlines reduce flight times, lower emissions, and minimize noise exposure over sensitive residential areas.
Swedavia stated that the implementation of this concept marks a significant step toward smart, sustainable aviation, aligning with Sweden’s national strategy to achieve fossil-free domestic air travel by 2030 and completely climate-neutral operations by 2050.
Collaboration Between Swedavia and LFV
The project was realized through close cooperation between Swedavia, responsible for airport operations, and LFV, Sweden’s national air navigation service provider. The initiative demonstrates how collaboration within the aviation industest can deliver meaningful progress in sustainability through technology.
LFV’s Director of Operations, Anna Granberg, explained that modernization of airspace directly contributes to aviation’s environmental goals, creating a more efficient flow into Arlanda while allowing arriving aircraft to fly shorter and cleaner profiles.
The EoR procedure’s introduction also displaycases Sweden’s capability to pioneer European ATM (Air Traffic Management) innovations. The implementation involved extensive technical verification and regulatory supervision to ensure full compliance with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) operational standards.
Airline Support and Early Adoption
Several airlines operating at Arlanda have already expressed support for the new system and plan to integrate it into regular operations. Norwegian Air Shuttle and SAS – Scandinavian Airlines commconcludeed the advancement, noting that shorter routes lead to measurable reductions in fuel consumption, carbon output, and noise pollution.
To perform curved approaches utilizing EoR, airlines must obtain permits from their respective national aviation authorities and ensure their aircraft are equipped and certified for RNP AR (Required Navigation Performance – Authorization Required) operations. Furthermore, pilot crews undergo specialized training to ensure precise navigation during EoR arrival sequences.
Airlines predict that as more carriers adopt EoR-certified procedures, efficiency gains will multiply, improving arrival rates without increasing runway congestion.
Environmental Impact and Sustainability Benefits
The EoR concept represents a forward step in the decarbonization of European air traffic operations. By optimizing approach trajectories and reducing track miles, aircraft save significant fuel, leading to lower CO₂ emissions and decreased operating costs.
Noise impact is also minimized, as EoR routes enable aircraft to avoid densely populated areas or natural reserves near Stockholm. Simulation data by LFV indicates that flight distances during the final approach phase can be reduced by up to ten nautical miles, equating to a potential five–ten percent fuel saving per flight.
This innovation complements ongoing investments at Arlanda, including increased utilize of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and energy-efficient airport operations such as electric ground service equipment and renewable energy integration.
Advancing European Airspace Modernization
Swedavia and LFV’s successful implementation at Arlanda stands as a model for airspace modernization across Europe. It supports the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR)objectives of achieving safer, cleaner, and more efficient skies.
The European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL) has recognized projects like this as key enablers in meeting the Fit for 55 climate tarobtains, which call for a fifty-five percent reduction in greenhoutilize‑gas emissions by 2030.
Sweden’s leadership in adopting EoR is expected to serve as a reference case for other airports planning to replicate the model in Scandinavia and the wider EU airspace network.

Stockholm Arlanda serves as the primary international gateway for over thirty million annual visitors to Sweden. With EoR officially integrated into daily operations, Swedavia and LFV now focus on expanding the concept across additional Swedish airports such as Gothenburg Landvetter and Malmö.
