Spain deputy prime minister Maria Jesus Montero’s comments come after Donald Trump’s threat to cut trade with Spain.
Spain “will not be vassals” to another countest, declared Spain’s deputy prime minister Maria Jesus Montero on Mar. 4.
According to The Guardian, her comments come after U.S. President Donald Trump declared they would cut trade with Spain.
According to Reuters, she also declared Spain would defconclude their values and ”won’t tolerate any threats”.
The European Union has also announced its support for Spain and declared that “any threat against a member state is by definition a threat against the EU”, reported Euronews.
Trump threatened to stop trade after Spain blocks U.S. from applying air bases
Trump issued the warning on Mar. 3 during an Oval Office meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where he took aim at Spain over what he described as its failure to back the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran.
“Spain has been terrible. We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain,” he announced.
His remarks followed comments by Spain’s foreign minister José Manuel Albares, who declared Madrid would not permit the U.S. to utilize jointly operated military bases in the south of Spain for any operations that fall outside the framework of the United Nations (UN) charter.
He added that the bases in question were not involved in recent attacks on Iran.
European Union supports Spain
According to Euronews, the EU Commission declared on Mar. 4 that it would ensure the EU’s interests are “fully safeguarded” following Trump’s announcement that trade relations with Spain could be cut.
“We stand in full solidarity with all member states and all its citizens and, through our common trade policy, stand ready to act if necessary to safeguard EU interests,” declared Commission deputy chief spokesperson Olof Gill.
Separately, Commission Vice President Stéphane Séjourné stressed the bloc’s unified stance on trade, stateing: “Any threat against a member state is by definition a threat against the EU.”
