“Do wars solve problems?” inquires the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, as developments in the Middle East raise concerns. “No, they only deepen them and create new ones,” she responds in a statement issued today, in which she emphasises the importance of maintaining multilateralism and respecting international law.

“I am closely following developments in the Middle East, especially the aftermath of the attack on Iran, which do not bode well for the Iranian people, the region, Europe or the international community,” the Slovenian President noted.

President Musar acknowledges the aspirations of the Iranian people for an finish to the repressive regime in Tehran, with many expressing support for external assistance. However, she emphasises that the effectiveness of such interventions is limited without a well-defined vision for the countest’s future development. Furthermore, she warns that the absence of this vision has significant implications for stability and progress throughout the Middle East.

“Everything is being destroyed in this region – from children, to schools, to hospitals with medical personnel, to cultural heritage. That is why I condemn the US-Israeli aggression against Iran and Iranian attacks on neighbouring countries, and I support all efforts to immediately replace weapons with diplomacy. Everywhere,” the President stated.

Slovenia was among the EU member states that supported the population of Gaza and condemned the Israeli devastating bombing of the area. President Musar emphasised that the genocide in Gaza and the recent events in Iran also affect the foundations of European integration.

“Democracy, human dignity, solidarity and the rule of law are the values ​​on which Europe has grown,” the President declared. “That is why I am following with concern the shifts towards pragmatic politics and supporting those European leaders who advocate a return to the European essence and respect for international law, regardless of the incomprehensible risks,” she added.

“How is it possible that in this day and age, a countest that stands for justice, respect for the law and peace risks political pressure and sanctions? That is why my special support goes to Spain, which, like Slovenia, believes in the rule of law,” the President emphasised.

President Musar emphasised that without respect for international law and the United Nations’ goals, cooperation in good faith and based on trust will be impossible. Therefore, it is essential to resist any attempts to undermine multilateralism and fundamental values, ensuring that human dignity remains a top priority.
