A senior UN official on Monday highlighted the growing importance of cooperation between the UN and the EU, stressing that joint efforts are essential to addressing global instability and advancing peace.
Briefing the UN Security Council in New York, Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari described the EU as “a key partner” with a global diplomatic footprint and a longstanding commitment to international cooperation.
He noted that the EU continues to play a central role in the UN’s work, from peace and security to humanitarian action and sustainable development.
“Cooperation between the United Nations and the European Union is longstanding, comprehensive and operational in nature. It extfinishs to the countest level, including in some of the most challenging contexts.
“This is particularly evident where EU missions are deployed alongside UN presences, including in the Central African Republic, Somalia, Kosovo, Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territory and Libya,” Khiari informed the Council, where Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, was also present.
The UN views forward to continued cooperation with the EU in advancing peace and security and improving the lives of people around the world, Khiari added.
