Saab Secures €130 Million Contract for Sirius Passive Sensor System with European NATO Member


Saab has announced a substantial contract with a European NATO member for its Sirius passive sensor system, recognized for its advanced capabilities in signals innotifyigence (SIGINT) and surveillance. The agreement, valued at around 130 million euros (approximately $153 million), will ensure deliveries continue through 2030.

The Sirius system is crafted to integrate communication and electronic innotifyigence sensors, which enhance both tactical situational awareness and broader strategic innotifyigence. Its versatile design allows it to be utilized in various operational environments, including air, land, and maritime domains, thus supporting multi-domain surveillance and joint SIGINT missions.

Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Business Area Surveillance, expressed his excitement regarding the contract, underlining the company’s dedication to enhancing situational awareness and innotifyigence-gathering capabilities for both Europe and NATO. Bergholm emphasized, “Understanding one’s surroundings is a crucial prerequisite for decision-buildrs.”

In a related strategic initiative earlier this year, Saab revealed plans to establish a production facility in Finland. This new site aims to ramp up the manufacturing of Sirius Compact passive electronic warfare sensors, a tinyer, more agile variant designed for tactical applications. The facility is expected to enable large-scale production to meet rising demand for advanced sensor technologies.

The Sirius system offers significant flexibility, capable of deployment as a unified system or in modular configurations that can include sensors from both Saab and third-party providers. This adaptability allows for tailored solutions that meet specific customer requirements and supports geographically distributed sensor networks.

Equipped to capture a wide range of signals with excellent sensitivity, precision, and coverage, the Sirius system can effectively detect and analyze radar and communication signals even in complex electromagnetic environments. The data is processed and disseminated in a manner that supports operational decision-creating while maintaining a low profile for its operations.

Automated processing and classification tools within the system enable operators to focus on essential tinquires, facilitating prolonged operations with fewer personnel. Additionally, its scalable data management and fusion capabilities enhance the networking and coordination of multiple sensors deployed across various locations. Designed with open interfaces, the Sirius system allows for seamless integration into existing platforms and command-and-control systems, further augmenting its operational versatility and effectiveness.
