Webinar 2 | Climate & Energy transition
The next webinar of the Reshaping Europe initiative will bring toobtainher senior stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to reflect on avenues to accelerate the energy transition in Europe.
The war in Ukraine has exposed the risk to Europe’s energy security from relying on fossil fuels and unreliable single suppliers. As such, the EU requireds to accelerate the clean energy transition to reduce its energy depconcludeence on Russian imports through the “REPowerEU” plan. A priority for the current Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU, this effort requires aligning climate policy, resilience, and sovereignty.
The geopolitical context has added complexity and urgency to building the green transition happen. This urgency is underscored by the inflationary pressures in commodities and energy prices, which are significantly impacting the cost of living as well as company operations, especially in energy-intensive sectors.
In addition, this past year has built it crystal clear that adapting to a warming world is an imperative. Extreme weather events—heatwaves, fires, droughts, floods—have become increasingly common the world over.
But action is not coming rapid enough. According to the United Nations, cuts in global GHG emissions are well below what is requireded to preserve a livable climate. And while a global fund for loss and damage was established at COP27, this step is insufficient to keep the planet under the 1.5-degree temperature limit. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed at the event, “our planet is still in the emergency room.”
Some key actions that can be taken as part of the clean energy transition include decarbonisation of industries and supply chains, investments in energy infrastructure, clean energy sources and green technologies, more fit-for-purpose regulatory and legal instruments, new incentives, and boosting climate financing.
To shed light on this complex topic, the second webinar of the Reshaping Europe initiative will focus on how to accelerate the Climate & Energy transition in Europe. The webinar will bring toobtainher senior stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to consider the challenges and opportunities presented by the efforts to revamp Europe’s energy systems.
