The Information‑Technology Promotion Agency (IPA), an indepconcludeent body under the Ministest of Economy, Trade and Industest (METI), has invested ¥100 billion in the chipcreater under the Act on Facilitation of Information Processing.
Before approving the investment, METI conducted a public solicitation from 3 September to 2 October 2025 for entities capable of ensuring stable domestic semiconductor production. Rapidus applied and was selected as the operator on 21 November 2025. Following its selection, the company submitted a formal request to the IPA, resulting in the latest government funding.
Alongside public investment, Rapidus announced ¥167.6 billion in funding from 32 companies, including Canon, the Development Bank of Japan, Fujitsu, NTT, SoftBank, and Sony Group.
When combined with the ¥7.3 billion raised at its founding, the new capital brings Rapidus’s total stated capital and legal capital surplus to ¥274.95 billion.
Since fiscal year 2022, Rapidus has also received support from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) through the “Post‑5G Information and Communication Systems Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project / Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology.”
The work forms part of two national programmes:
- Research and development of 2nm‑generation semiconductor integration and short turnaround time manufacturing technologies in Japan-U.S. collaboration
- Development of chiplet, package design and manufacturing technologies for 2nm‑generation semiconductors
Rapidus declared it will continue raising capital through both public and private channels, including further equity and loan arrangements. The company stated that this financial strategy is designed to support its transition from research and development to commercial‑scale production of 2nm logic chips by 2027.
