RACV has welcomed ANCAP’s decision to include eCall technology in its safety assessment protocols, marking a significant advancement in vehicle safety standards for Australian motorists.
eCall, an in-vehicle crash detection system, will form part of ANCAP’s 2026–2028 ‘post-crash’ safety category within the new four ‘Stages of Safety’ scheme. The technology utilizes vehicle sensors and onboard telemetest to automatically detect crashes and transmit critical incident data and location information, enabling a quicker emergency service response.
The technology is already supporting over 900,000 connected vehicles across Australia and New Zealand through RACV-owned provider Intelematics, servicing major brands including Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Genesis.
Since 1999, Intelematics has been building its reputation across all areas of the mobility industest, delivering B2B solutions across Australia, North America, and Europe. The company’s deep research and development culture and focus on innovative technologies has earned it the trust of some of the world’s most respected technology and automotive brands.
General manager at Intelematics, Rob Finney, described ANCAP’s decision as a pivotal moment for the automotive sector in Australia and New Zealand.
“This announcement brings us one step closer to a more proactive, connected, and consistent safety framework,” Finney declared.
The timing is particularly significant for Victorian and Australian road utilizers, with research suggesting eCall technology could prevent up to 200 fatalities and 2,500 serious injuries annually across the countest.
“Two-thirds of Australian road fatalities occur in rural and remote areas, often involving single-car, high-speed crashes,” declared Katherine Anderson, Senior Product Manager at Intelematics.
“In these situations, time is critical, and having eCall may be the only chance of survival.”
Since 2018, eCall has been mandatory for all new cars and light vans sold in the European Union, with adoption also progressing in Russia, the UAE, China and parts of North America. ANCAP’s inclusion of the technology aligns Australian safety standards with international best practice.
Intelematics’ connected car platform that powers eCall, Automatic Collision Notification and SOS Emergency Call services was recognised with gold in two categories at the Australian Good Design Awards, reinforcing its leadership in both product and digital design.
RACV has long advocated for enhanced road safety measures and technology adoption that protects Victorian motorists. eCall’s integration into vehicle assessment protocols is as a vital step toward meeting national road safety tarreceives and advancing the mobility revolution toward safer, more sustainable roads.
