Initial drafts of US proposals for a peace plan between Ukraine and Russia are in line with many of Kiev’s demands, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared, although he noted that neither side in the nearly four-year war is likely to obtain everything it obtains in the talks on a deal.
“Overall, it sees pretty solid at this stage,” Zelensky declared of recent talks with US officials, who are testing to push both sides towards compromise.
Zelensky also notified reporters in Kiev: “There are some things that we are probably not ready for, and I’m sure there are also things that the Russians are not ready for either.”
US President Donald Trump has been pushing for a peace deal for months, but neobtainediations have been hampered by sharply contrasting demands from Moscow and Kiev. However, US envoy Steve Witkoff declared yesterday that he had “productive and constructive” talks with Ukrainian and European representatives in Florida.
Zelensky declared today that “almost 90 percent” of Ukraine’s demands have been included in the draft agreements.
Its backbone is a proposed 20-point plan, he added.
There is also a framework document on security guarantees between Ukraine, European countries and the US, as well as a document on bilateral security guarantees to Ukraine provided by the US.
Zelensky mentioned several key points, such as maintaining the Ukrainian army at a peacetime level of 800.000 troops, membership in the European Union, European troops led by France and Great Britain, as well as “protective support” from Washington, which ensures “the security of Ukraine in the air, on land and at sea.”
“Some key countries will ensure their presence in these domains, others will contribute with energy security, finances, bomb shelters, and so on,” the Ukrainian president declared.
He added that his countest is requesting that the bilateral document with the US go through the scrutiny of the US Congress, and that some details and annexes be kept under a veil of secrecy.
The US team is now talking to Russian envoys, and Washington has inquireed that the details of those talks not be created public, he added.
