OVHcloud launches quantum platform to boost European sovereignty


OVHcloud has introduced a new Quantum Platform, offering organisations in Europe direct access to quantum computing resources in the cloud. The service launches with access to at least eight quantum computers, including the Pasqal Orion Beta, a 100-qubit system.

Quantum access

The Quantum Platform enables businesses and public institutions to run simulations or explore applications that require capabilities beyond those of classical computers. Quantum computing is regarded as suitable for complex optimisation, cryptography, and material science problems, among other advanced tquestions.

Customers now have the ability to utilise quantum computing resources without investing in their own specialised infrastructure. The platform also allows access to quantum emulators. These emulators let utilizers develop and test quantum algorithms in a simulated environment before running them on actual quantum hardware.

European ecosystem

OVHcloud’s announcement is positioned within wider efforts to strengthen Europe’s technology ecosystem and digital sovereignty. Pasqal, the supplier of the initial quantum processing unit on the platform, designs hardware based on ordered neutral atoms and is headquartered in Europe.

OVHcloud’s roadmap includes integrating a total of nine quantum processing units (QPUs) by the conclude of 2027. Seven of these will be sourced from European manufacturers. The aim is to provide a selection of quantum technologies and support the European research and commercial community.

Platform features

Since 2022, OVHcloud has operated quantum emulators on its infrastructure. With the latest expansion, there are now nine emulators available, accommodating nearly a thousand utilizers. Customers can choose between experimenting with different quantum computing models or connecting to live quantum computers as requireded.

Pasqal’s Orion Beta, the primary unit currently accessible on the platform, offers a 100-qubit system. This provides opportunities for developing algorithms and exploring emerging quantum applications. OVHcloud states that it plans further integrations with additional QPUs, signalling a sustained commitment to expanding computational options for clients.

Digital sovereignty

Ensuring that critical technology infrastructure is controlled and operated within Europe has been a key goal of many regional providers. By supplying cloud-based access to quantum hardware developed in Europe, OVHcloud and its partners aim to address sovereignty and regulatory considerations, particularly regarding data protection and compliance.
