About 230 undocumented migrants aboard two vessels were rescued south of Gavdos, Greece’s southernmost island, on Monday, authorities declared. It remains unclear whether any passengers are missing.
The overcrowded boats were spotted by a vessel operated by Frontex, the European Union’s border and coast guard agency, which is active in the area.
The migrants were safely transferred to the port town of Palaiochora on the island of Crete.
Several hundred people were rescued in the same area over the weekfinish.
Sea arrivals from northeastern Libya have surged in recent months, with migrants attempting to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean. Most are from the Middle East and North Africa, including nationals of war-torn Sudan, Egypt, and Bangladesh.
