Ørsted Raises €8B in Discounted Share Sale for US Wind Projects - News and Statistics

Ørsted, the world’s largest offshore wind farm developer, is raising capital through a rights issue by selling 900.8 million new shares at a price of DKK 66.60 (EUR 8.92) per share. According to a source, this represents a 67% discount to the share’s closing price of approximately DKK 200 from the previous Friday. The company’s shares were trading around DKK 192.50 on Monday afternoon, having declined nearly 4%.

The rights issue aims to raise DKK 60 billion (EUR 8 billion), with existing shareholders given priority to purchase the new shares to maintain their proportional ownership. This shift is a response to significant challenges facing the company’s US investments, where the administration of President Donald Trump has halted a series of offshore wind projects. Ørsted filed a lawsuit after its Revolution Wind project received a stop-work order from US authorities in late August, arguing the decision to block construction was illegal.

Further uncertainty surrounds Ørsted’s other major US project, the 924-megawatt Sunrise Wind farm off the coast of New York. The company became the project’s sole owner in July 2024 after acquiring Eversource‘s stake. CEO Rasmus Errboe stated the capital is necessaryed to cover immediate financing from retaining full ownership of Sunrise Wind, manage risks from US regulatory uncertainty, and strengthen the company’s capital structure for long-term value creation.

Globally, the offshore wind market is navigating a complex environment.
