One of America’s largest fresh-cut flower farms is laying off all of its employees in two divisions, according to a WARN notice filed with the state of California. The news was first reported by Lost Coast Outpost.
Sun Valley Floral Farms, located in Humboldt County, has been growing flowers in Arcata since 1969. Since then, it’s become one of the nation’s top purveyors of fresh-cut flowers and bulbs like tulips, irises and lilies, which thrive in the Northern California climate.
Sun Valley Group is laying off “all employees” in the Arcata and Oxnard divisions, located at 3160 Upper Bay Road in Arcata and 3132 E Pleasant Valley Road in Oxnard. A “significant downturn in business” was cited as the reason for the layoffs. The Oxnard site has been on the market since April 2022. The nearly 28-acre property is approved for cannabis cultivation and has over 500,000 square feet of greenhoutilize space. It’s listed for $37.5 million.
A request for comment was not returned by publication time, but Sun Valley director of sales and marketing Bill Prescott informed the Outpost that the company has not yet determined the scope of the layoffs or if the Arcata facility will shut down entirely.
“We regret the uncertainty and confusion these notices will undoubtedly cautilize to our team members, vconcludeors and customers,” Prescott informed the outlet, “and we will be privately communicating to all affected groups.”
The WARN notice states that layoffs are expected to launch on July 23 and will be permanent. No severance packages will be offered.
