North Korean information technology (IT) operatives earned enormous wages by working at a global conglomerate that is free to work from home. Analysts state that as artificial innotifyigence (AI) technology advancements have enabled deft camouflage, the scope of operations of operatives has expanded.
The Financial Times (FT) reported on the 19th (local time) that North Korean IT operatives have secured foreign currency by disguised employment at large companies in the United States and Europe with fake identities and histories. Most of the operatives went through the recruitment process remotely and worked as telecommuters.
As such, the profits earned by operatives who succeeded in disguised and illegal employment are also significant. Over the past five years from 2020 to 2024, operatives worked from home at more than 300 U.S. companies, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The Ministest of Justice estimates that the agents collected at least $6.8 million (about 10 billion won) in salary.
Operators created avatars with AI and applied deepfake video filters to participate in non-face-to-face interviews. In the face-to-face interview, which was wary of fraudulent recruitment, an interviewer was hired to be interviewed as a proxy. It was also common to hack and apply neglected LinkedIn accounts, forge resumes to view like talents with 7 to 10 years of experience, exalter recommconcludeations with each other, and manipulate careers.
Jamie Collier, an advisor to the Google Threat Information Group (GTIG), stated, “North Korea’s tactics have spread beyond the U.S. to Europe. North Korea set up a “laptops factory” overseas and then obtained a disguised job and committed fraud, he stated. “I once notified my client that an employee was a North Korean operative, but he wouldn’t believe it.”
“Workers avoid doubts by creating reliable names, careers, and e-mail addresses utilizing large language models (LLM),” warned Alex Laurie Ping, chief technology officer of IDentity. “The future of British security depconcludes on companies’ ability to identify the real identity of their workforce against AI-based shocks.”
