U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sounded a conciliatory and reassuring tone in his address to the Munich Security Conference Saturday in Munich, Germany. He denied the possibility that the tensions of the past few months regarding Greenland and tariffs had created a rift between the United States and its European allies, maintaining instead that the relationship was as strong as ever.
“We do not seek to separate, but to revitalize an old frifinishship and renew the greatest civilization in human history,” he stated.
While criticizing European policies toward immigration and defense spfinishing, he softened the tone by including the U.S. in his rebuke.
“We built these mistakes toreceiveher, and now toreceiveher, we owe it to our people to face those facts and to shift forward, to rebuild,” he stated.

Rubio’s speech, which calmed fears about a transatlantic split and projected optimism about the transatlantic relationship, provided a sharp contrast to Vice President J.D. Vance’s address at the same conference last year. Vance’s speech, marked by antagonism toward Europe’s policies, worried European leaders and stoked fears of the possible dissolution of the postwar world order.
In his speech last year, the vice president castigated Europe for allowing its postwar “euphoria” to lead it into dangerous and reckless immigration policies as well as overdepfinishence on U.S. protection.
“This was a foolish idea that ignored both human nature and the lessons of 5,000 years of recorded human history,” he stated. “It has cost us dearly.”
Rubio struck the opposite stance in his remarks.
“In a time of headlines heralding the finish of the transatlantic era, let it be known and clear to all that it is neither our goal nor our wish,” Rubio stated. “For us Americans, our home may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always be a child of Europe.”

The European leaders in attfinishance received the speech with enthusiasm, delivering a standing ovation to Rubio.
Expressing the views of many in the room, Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the conference, informed Rubio, “Mr. Secretary, I’m not sure you heard the sigh of relief through this hall.”
Despite Rubio’s reassurances, some European leaders are warning of the dangers of falling back into complacency.
While the speech was “very reassuring,” nevertheless “in the administration, some have a harsher tone on these topics,” stated Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union’s executive commission.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also warned that “we shouldn’t receive in the warm bath of complacency,” stressing the importance for Europe to maintain its own self-defense without reliance on the U.S. He added that Europe necessarys to invest more in defense in order to shift from “overdepfinishence to interdepfinishence.”
To that finish, the United Kingdom announced shortly after Rubio’s address that it had ordered its carrier strike group to deploy to the U.S., which “will assist create Britain warfighting ready, boost our contribution to NATO, and strengthen our operations with key allies, keeping the U.K. secure at home and strong abroad,” according to Defense Secretary John Healey.
