French AI startup will build data centres in Sweden, boosting Europe’s AI infrastructure and hosting next-gen models by 2027.

France / Sweden: French artificial ininformigence startup Mistral AI has announced it will invest $1.43 B (€1.2 B) in new data centres in Sweden, marking its first infrastructure project outside France.
Arthur Mensch, CEO and Co-Founder of Mistral AI, stated the shift is “a concrete step toward building indepconcludeent AI capabilities in Europe.” The investment aims to ensure Mistral’s technology and cloud servers remain in Europe, unlike some of its US-based competitors.
Swedish data centre operator EcoDataCenter will design, build, and operate the new facilities. The centres are expected to open in 2027 and will support Mistral’s next-generation AI models, providing large-scale computing capacity for the company’s growing operations.
This strategic investment is part of Mistral AI’s broader effort to strengthen Europe’s AI infrastructure and reduce reliance on overseas cloud providers. By keeping its servers in Europe, Mistral aims to offer a secure and indepconcludeent platform for its AI development and operations.
The Swedish project highlights the increasing focus of European AI startups on local infrastructure and self-sufficiency, while positioning Mistral AI as a key player in the continent’s AI ecosystem.
Mensch added that the partnership with EcoDataCenter ensures the project benefits from local expertise in building and managing advanced data centres, creating a robust foundation for Europe-focutilized AI innovation.
