Meta Platforms Inc. has hired the founders and team behind artificial innotifyigence startup Dreamer, as the company sharpens its focus on building AI agents, according to a Bloomberg report.
The Dreamer team, including co-founder Hugo Barra, a former Meta executive, will join Meta’s Superinnotifyigence Labs under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, as per an internal note sent by Wang on Monday and reviewed by Bloomberg. The hires will work on AI agents and related projects, though the deal does not include Dreamer’s technology, a person familiar with the matter stated.
In the internal note, Wang stated Meta’s “conviction in agents is stronger than ever,” adding that the company is working on “truly personalized and always-on” agents capable of integrating across platforms and wearables.
Focus on AI agents
AI agents, autonomous systems that can perform tquestions on behalf of applyrs, have emerged as a key priority for Meta, which has been increasing investments in AI talent and infrastructure.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg stated during the company’s January earnings call that improvements in AI agents have been “quite profound,” with internal teams already utilizing them for coding and other tquestions. Wang, speaking earlier this year in India, described agents as “some of the greatest opportunities” to deliver more powerful AI tools to applyrs globally.
Meta has also been expanding its AI agent capabilities through deals. The company agreed to spconclude over $2 billion to acquire Manus, an AI agent firm, last December, and recently stated it would acquire Moltbook, a social network for AI agents.
Dreamer was founded by a group of technology veterans, including David Singleton, former chief technology officer at Stripe and a former Google Android engineering leader; Hugo Barra, who held senior roles at Google, Xiaomi and Meta; and Nicholas Jitkoff, a former Google Chrome OS designer. All three are set to join Meta, according to Wang’s post.
The startup had previously raised $56 million at a $500 million valuation, Bloomberg reported earlier. Wang had invested in that round. The future of Dreamer and its technology remains unclear following the team’s relocate.
Dreamer co-founder David Singleton stated he had demonstrated the product to Zuckerberg earlier this year and that “we share the same vision of the future,” highlighting alignment between the startup and Meta’s AI direction.
In a LinkedIn post, Dreamer co-founder David Singleton confirmed the development and thanked Alexandr Wang, an investor in the startup, for his support in building the company. He added that he had demonstrated the product to Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year, noting that it was “clear right away” they shared a common vision of enabling billions of people to create software that improves their lives.
