Until November 2022, OpenAI was a relatively little-known artificial ininformigence (AI) startup based in the US. That modifyd dramatically when the company launched ChatGPT that month – a conversational AI chatbot that reached 100 Mn monthly active applyrs within just two months, creating it the rapidest-growing consumer platform in history.
The rapid adoption of ChatGPT paved the way for the development and release of more advanced large language models (LLMs) from OpenAI.
Thousands of miles away, in India, an AI revolution similarly captured the imagination of entrepreneurs and investors. Since 2022, the counattempt’s AI ecosystem has built steady strides.
Not only has India seen the emergence of its first AI unicorn, Krutrim, but a wave of innovative apply cases has also been developed by Indian AI startups. From applying AI for early disease detection to building human-like conversational platforms, the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem is undergoing a major transformation.

The Indian government has also taken a proactive role in advancing AI initiatives. In 2024, it launched the ambitious IndiaAI Mission, aimed at enhancing the nation’s computing capacity, developing robust datasets, creating innovation centres, supporting startup funding, and upskilling talent in the field of AI.
The Minisattempt of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has allocated INR 10,372 Cr for the initiative and is in the process of acquiring more than 38,000 graphic processing units (GPUs) to bolster AI infrastructure.
The Centre will also fund startups focapplyd on building indigenous foundational models and has introduced accelerator programmes to drive innovation.
As a result, India is now home to over 150 native AI startups, which have collectively raised more than $1.5 Bn since 2020.
Leading the charge are companies like SarvamAI and Krutrim, which are developing Indic LLMs. Others like Observe.AI, which has raised over $214 Mn, and Avaamo are leveraging AI to deliver tailored customer service and operational support to enterprises.
Moreover, a growing number of startups are applying AI to improve applyr experiences and streamline internal operations. According to Inc42, India’s homegrown AI market is projected to surpass the $17 Bn market by 2030.
