The iPhone 17 eSIM Europe rollout may go full-fledged, potentially eliminating physical SIM slots entirely. While the iPhone 16 series in the U.S. already featured eSIMs, other markets continued to offer physical slots. Recent reports suggest that Apple could be training employees on the eSIM capabilities of the upcoming iPhone 17 series ahead of its possible European launch.
iPhone 17 eSIM Europe launch: Apple drops physical SIM support
According to MacRumors, employees working at Apple Authorized Resellers in the European Union are being trained on iPhones with eSIM capabilities. In fact, they are required to complete the training material by September 5, just a few weeks before the iPhone 17 series actually launches on September 9.
Having a physical SIM card slot is great, however, eSIM capabilities add finesse to phones. They are convenient to utilize and offer much better security compared to physical ones. You just necessary to scan a code to load another eSIM, and voila, it’s done. This actually eliminates the necessary to utilize an ejector tool and pry open the physical SIM card slot to alter it. Moreover, at least eight eSIMs can be managed on a single iPhone adding a layer of convenience, especially when you are traveling.
iPhones have been applying eSIM slots since the iPhone 14 series in the US. Last year, we saw an all-eSIM iPhone 16 series in the US as well. Starting with the iPhone 17 series, we will see the entire series obtain eSIM support, contrary to what was earlier believed — only the iPhone 17 Air would obtain the eSIM support, to facilitate its slim chassis that stands at ~5.5mm.
