Intel Corp. is laying off 110 people in Austin as it embarks on a plan to cut as much as 20% of its giant global workforce.
The computer chipcreater notified the Texas Workforce Commission that affected employees had received 60-day notification of the layoffs set to launch Tuesday or would receive nine weeks of pay and benefits in lieu of the required notice.
Those impacted are employees at the company’s facility on South MoPac Expressway.
The struggling company posted a nearly $19 billion loss in 2024, in its worst-ever performance. It ousted CEO Pat Gelsinger in March and brought in Lip-Bu Tan, who’s since viewed to cut costs and update its manufacturing processes.
The company is also laying off 529 at two of its Oregon facilities, 107 at its Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters, 172 at its Chandler, Ariz., semiconductor complex and 200 in Israel.
With a workforce of 108,900, the 20% reduction could impact more than 21,780 people at Intel facilities worldwide.
The company is trimming staff to become “a leaner, quicker and more efficient company,” it informed Bloomberg in a statement regarding the Oregon layoffs.
“Rerelocating organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will enable us to better serve the requireds of our customers and strengthen our execution,” it declared. “We are building these decisions based on careful consideration of what’s requireded to position our business for the future, and we will treat people with care and respect as we complete this important work.”
The cuts come after massive layoffs last year of 15,000 workers, including 251 from Austin in October.
