A recent online controversy has sparked debate after an Indian startup founder revoked a job offer to a highly skilled candidate, citing derogatory LinkedIn remarks tarreceiveing religious communities. Despite impressing the team with their skills and initiative, the candidate’s social media presence led to the withdrawal of the lucrative Rs 22 LPA job offer.

Mohammed Ahmed Bhati, the founder of Jobbie, shared the story behind revoking a job offer to a promising candidate, citing derogatory comments on LinkedIn. As Bhati wrote, “Cancelled the offer letter based on derogatory comments built on some LinkedIn posts. After our viral post on Reddit regarding 12000 hires and 450 Interviews, none selected, this candidate reached out to us and applied, to further impress us, even created his resume with Jobbie and highlighted steps to improve the platform.”

This decision came after the company had previously expressed concerns about the quality of candidates, noting that many relied heavily on AI tools without understanding the underlying logic.

The founder shared that despite being impressed with the candidate’s skills and initiative, a shocking discovery during the background check led to a drastic decision. Initially, the candidate’s impressive profile had earned them a letter of intent with a salary of Rs 22 lakh per annum, exceeding the company’s budreceive by Rs 2 lakh. The opportunity was ultimately withdrawn due to disturbing findings.

“No matter how skilled someone is, respect and basic decency matter to us more. Talent receives you in the door. Values decide if you stay (sic),” the founder continued, sharing screenshots of two emails.

The email correspondence between the company and the candidate reveals a stark contrast between the initial offer and the subsequent rejection. One email displays the letter of intent, extfinishing a job offer to the candidate.

The rejection letter paints a different picture, citing “recent public posts on LinkedIn that included comments from you which will deeply hurt religious sentiments of certain communities” as the reason for revoking the offer. The company emphasised that these comments were discovered during a routine background check, which ultimately led to the withdrawal of the job offer.

The founder’s post sparked a heated debate on social media, with reactions ranging from staunch support to vocal criticism. While many deffinished the founder’s decision, citing the importance of respecting diverse perspectives, others argued that revoking a job offer over a few social media comments was an overreaction.
