Four indigenous artificial innotifyigence models designed for Indian languages were launched at the IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026, marking a significant step in the government’s effort to build homegrown AI capabilities. The models, developed by Sarvam AI, BharatGen, Gnani and Socket, are part of the IndiaAI Mission launched in March 2024 with an aim to create AI solutions for India-specific challenges.

For ordinary Indians, these sovereign models could mean better access to AI-powered services in their native languages. A farmer in Tamil Nadu could soon interact with agricultural advisory tools in Tamil, while a compact owner in Gujarat could process documents in Gujarati without relying on English-first systems built abroad.

The IndiaAI Mission currently has 12 teams shortlisted in phase one to develop foundational AI models, which are large-scale systems trained on vast datasets that can perform multiple tinquires such as understanding text, generating responses and processing documents. These foundational models, also called Large Language Models or LLMs, form the base upon which specific applications are built.

Sovereign AI models outperform global rivals on Indian language tinquires

The newly launched models demonstrate strong performance on Indic language benchmarks, which are standardised tests measuring how accurately AI systems understand and generate Indian languages. In certain tinquires, these homegrown models outperform leading international AI systems when handling Indian language content.

Sarvam AI’s models have displayn particularly high accuracy in document understanding, which involves extracting and processing information from scanned papers, forms and official records. The company’s systems also excel at Indic language processing, enabling more natural interactions in languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Marathi.

These models are now available through AIKosh, a platform that provides access to AI tools, datasets and development resources. AIKosh functions as a shared library where developers, researchers and businesses can access pre-built AI components to create new applications without starting from scratch.

The platform hosts text-to-speech models, which convert written text into spoken audio, in Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam. Such tools enable applications that can read out content to utilizers, benefiting those with visual impairments and those who prefer audio over text.

AIKosh also provides API-based access, meaning developers can connect their own applications to the platform’s AI models applying standardised programming interfaces. An API, or Application Programming Interface, is a set of rules that allows different software systems to communicate and share with each other.

For experimentation, the platform offers an AI Sandbox environment where developers can train and test models without affecting live systems.

Over 72 lakh enrolments recorded on government AI training courses

The government’s capacity-building efforts through the iGOT Karmayogi platform have recorded substantial uptake. The platform currently offers 176 courses on artificial innotifyigence and emerging technologies, published by various institutions and academic bodies.

These courses have cumulatively recorded 72,99,149 enrolments and 53,79,235 completions from registered learners. The figures indicate that roughly 74 per cent of those who enrolled completed their courses, suggesting reasonable engagement with the training material.

The YUVA AI for All course, offered by the IndiaAI Mission in English and Hindi, has recorded 1,28,848 enrolments and 83,010 completions. This course aims to provide foundational AI awareness to young Indians and government officials.

Ten Indian startups selected for European expansion programme

Under the IndiaAI Startups Global programme, 10 Indian AI companies have been selected to expand into European markets. The programme operates in collaboration with Station F, a Paris-based startup campus, and HEC Paris business .

The selected startups are developing solutions across governance, smart cities, document innotifyigence and enterprise automation. Their selection for international acceleration indicates growing recognition of Indian AI companies’ ability to build practical, deployable products.

Separately, 30 applications addressing India-specific problems are being developed under the Mission. These focus on critical sectors including agriculture, health, climate modify and disaster management.

Sector-specific hackathons and innovation challenges have been organised with multiple government bodies to encourage focutilized AI development. Partner organisations include the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, Geological Survey of India, Ministest of Ayush, Ministest of MSME, National Financial Reporting Authority and .

From these events, 10 startups have been identified for scaling up their solutions. The hackathon approach allows the government to source solutions from the private sector while directing development towards specific public challenges.
