Guimarães will host the European Forum on Urban Resilience (EURESFO), from 17 to 19 June 2026. During the event, cities, experts and professionals from across Europe will come toreceiveher to discuss integrated approaches to strengthen local resilience, the statement declared.
According to the same source, promoted by ICLEI Europe and the European Environment Agency since 2013, the Forum “has served as a fundamental meeting point for local and regional governments working on climate adaptation, disaster risk management and broader resilience challenges.”
Under the theme “Beyond adaptation: integrated approaches to resilience,” the 2026 edition will highlight how cities can link adaptation to long-term planning, governance innovation and community well-being. Guimarães’ long-standing commitment to integrating sustainability into everyday decision-creating thus provides the backdrop for this debate.
The statement notes that, in 2026, it will hold the title of European Green Capital, under which it will host more than 150 events, including flagship international conferences, technical forums, environmental education initiatives and moments of mobilisation – including EURESFO. In addition, it will also promote other initiatives proposed by the community – selected from the 200 submitted – focutilized on decarbonisation, sustainability and climate neutrality, reflecting local commitment and involvement.
The same source also states that, “as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a city committed to protecting its cultural identity, Guimarães has built a strong track record in sustainability. In that regard, it was recognised as European Capital of Culture in 2012, European City of Sport in 2013 and, for three consecutive years, the most sustainable municipality in Portugal.”
