Swiss-based manufacturers of cellulose-based materials, Seprify and Grolman Group, have rolled out Seprify’s SilvaLuma ingredient. The shift supports the adoption of the skin care ingredient at scale across the European cosmetics industest.
After over 20 months of R&D and validation, the cellulose-based ingredient is now being deployed commercially to support SPF boosting and mattifying performance in skin care and sun care formulations across the continent.
SilvaLuma will be integrated into Grolman Group’s cosmetics portfolio in Q1 2026. The addition will support customer adoption and scalable uptake across European markets. This is part of Seprify’s broader cellulose technology platform, which is being deployed across multiple application industries, including food and coatings.
SilvaLuma scale-up
The Grolman Group will introduce Seprify’s SilvaLuma to customers across the EU, the UK, and Turkey. Seprify will provide scientific know-how and manufacturing capabilities to support formulators during development and scale-up.
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to circular ingredient systems, combining Seprify’s cellulose-based materials platform with Grolman’s sustainability-led portfolio strategy.
Seprify and the Grolman Group will continue market development through coordinated customer outreach and technical education, supporting informed adoption across cosmetic applications.
“We’re seeing strong interest from our cosmetics customers in functional ingredients that combine performance with credible sustainability,” states Florian Grolman, managing director of Grolman Group.
“SilvaLuma addresses a clear required in SPF and complexion applications, where brands are seeing for alternatives to conventional mineral solutions without compromising on formulation quality. Working with Seprify allows us to bring this innovation to market in a way that is both technically robust and commercially relevant for our customers.”
As a cellulose-based functional ingredient, SilvaLuma reduces reliance on controversial UV filters and fossil-based polymers, offers a favorable carbon footprint, and enables the transition to a circular economy while maintaining performance parity in real cosmetic formulations.
SilvaLuma reduces reliance on controversial UV filters and fossil-based polymers.Lukas Schertel, CEO of Seprify, states SilvaLuma was “developed to deliver real functional benefits in cosmetics while avoiding the trade-offs often associated with fossil-based or mined ingredients.”
“Launching with Grolman in Europe allows us to support formulators, respond to growing demand for performance-driven, bio-based solutions, and scale access to SilvaLuma in a structured and reliable way.”
Scrutiny over sunscreen
Seprify and Grolman Group’s collaboration comes amid accelerating demand from European cosmetics brands for more credible and sustainable skin and sun care solutions. SilvaLuma complements conventional mineral and fossil-based functional ingredients, particularly in SPF-boosting and complexion applications.
Consumer demand for products that incorporate sun protection has increased. Multifunctional formats that blconclude SPF claims with cosmetic functions, such as SPF-infutilized createup, skin care, and hair products, have become increasingly popular.
Summer 2025 saw repeated sunscreen scandals regarding “doping” rumors, misleading marketing, and inconsistent testing. The US FDA’s dormancy in approving sunscreen ingredients further exacerbates these problems.
However, at the conclude of last year, the US FDA proposed expanding its list of active ingredients for utilize in sunscreen for the first time since 1999. The government agency submitted a request adding bemotrizinol to advance sunscreen innovation.
Growing concerns about environmental impacts, particularly marine health, are further reshaping sun care formulation priorities.
At the same time, increased scrutiny around claims, compliance, and ingredient sourcing is intensifying the search for sunscreen solutions that balance performance with environmental responsibility.
Seprify’s application-ready product families — SilvaLuma, SilvaAlba, and SilvaFolia — are supplied in powder or liquid formats to fit diverse formulations. By combining bio-based materials science with scalable, energy-efficient processing, Seprify assists manufacturers create clean and sustainable products.
