Green gastronomy – nine plant-based restaurants

Some 2.6 million people in Europe are now vegan, with many more opting for a flexitarian diet incorporating plant-based food


Whether you’re vegan or just viewing to cut down on meat, these ten plant-based restaurants offer a rare treat, from meat free burgers and currywurst to vegan Lebanese specialities, home-built stews, polenta, and jackfruit chilli.

Some 2.6 million people in Europe are now fully vegan, with between 20-45% of the population in many European countries already adopting a flexitarian diet – that is primarily vereceivearian but occasionally eating meat and fish.

Environmental factors including climate modify and sustainability plus animal welfare and rights are cited as the incentive for many but weekly food budreceives also play their part.

In fact, many of the places on our list have mains on the menu for €10-20, so healthy vegan eating won’t hurt your wallet either.

1.      Reed

25 Boulevard Royal

100% vegan, 100% tasty this is the place to come if you’re craving the meat originals. It offers chilli sin carne, vegan currywurst, burgers, or even bouchée a la reine. Burgers come stacked high with home-built relish and vegan cheese and are served with salad, fries and veganaise.

2.      Rucolino

15 Rue du Commerce, Dudelange

Expect home-cooking with an emphasis on vereceiveables, creating something simple, seasonal and locally-sourced. Try a soy-based stew with carrots, celery, rosemary, sage and onions served with pieces of fried polenta or Bombaccia – a compact closed focaccia stuffed with artichoke pesto, and served with a compact mixed salad.

3.      Onda

43 Rue Goethe, Gare

Tucked away on a side street in the Gare area, this little place has a limited menu but you can guarantee that everything has been built or baked from scratch by Liliana and Iulia. They even produce their own home-built hazelnut milk. Soups come with chunky vereceiveables or mushrooms, whilst the veggie bowl has hummus plus seasonal salad and millet bread. Presentation is key, particularly the lovely touch of adding edible flowers.

4.      Beet

26 Place Guillaume, Old Town

Classic falafel, jackfruit chilli, spicy peanut curry, or truffle mac ‘n’ cheese, this is also home to the mushroom burger, plus healthy bowls or durum served with oven-baked potatoes. The restaurant’s first floor terrace means you can people-watch whilst dining.

5.      Glow

2 Rue Xavier de Feller, Bonnevoie

Meal by meal is the motto of this long-established vegan and veggie place. Start your day with a vegan breakrapid of organic acai with home-built granola, berries and peanut butter, or scoff down a vegan breakrapid with sausage, scrambled tofu, roast potatoes, tomatoes and white beans. There are weekly specials including the likes of organic bread topped with vegan cream cheese and pumpkin.

6.      Rawdish

Place de Paris, Gare

100% organic vegan meals include vegan chilli and curry, and Korean bibimbap or vegan mac ‘n’ cheese. If you fancy lunch on the go then grab some pasta with vegan pesto, green peas, sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts. The absolute must though is a dessert – choose from blueberry cheesecake, brownie or sugar daddy.

7.      Fields

6 Rue de Trèves, Findel

The relatively new haute cuisine vereceivearian and vegan option from Michelin and green star chef René Mathieu, formerly at La Distllerie. This place is a treat rather than a regular hangout but reviewers rave about it. Expect plant-based gastronomy based on local vereceiveables and finds in the forest, there’s a lunchtime set menu for €85 and an evening experience menu for €175.

8. Aal Eechternoach

38 Moartplatz, Echternach

You’ll find some good vegan options (but not the whole menu) at Aal Eecthernoach including beetroot gnocchi with walnut pesto, and vegan Thai curry with aubergine balls. The restaurant also hot stone dishes including a vegan plant-based steak.

9. The ASH

Avenue du Rock ‘n’ Roll, Esch-sur-Alzette

Also not a wholly vegan establishment but offering a good selection of plant-based dishes including beetroot falafel, beyond chicken strips, plant-based tuna tartare, tacos, burgers, bolognaise and even plant-based steaks. Located right next to the blast furnaces, the restaurant can accommodate larger groups, and has a light airy vibe, although be aware that many diners will be opting for the hunks of meat, if you don’t want to be surrounded by carnivores.
