GATX introduces ACTS railcar solution in Europe


The ACTS solution for freight railcars is being introduced by GATX Rail Europe. It is meant to meet the increasingly dynamic demands of the logistics market. It also forms part of a fleet upgrade. ACTS-compatible cars are being added to the fleet. The operator is widening its intermodal transport options for waste management and industrial logistics.

The new setup is intfinished to improve rail integration into complex logistics chains. In those chains, flexibility and rapid handling are becoming more important. Medium- and long-distance freight volumes continue to grow across Europe.

ACTS solution for freight railcars and market rollout

GATX has already tested its ACTS railcar solution under real operating conditions. As GATX Rail Europe notes, the tests were part of the “Waste on Rail” initiative. In the first trials, waste was transported to a nearby incineration facility. The tests demonstrated the system’s technical functionality.

The tests revealed that the solution can support regular logistics flows. Still, wider deployment will depfinish on market conditions and national regulations. More than 400 million tons of waste are transported annually in Europe. Rail accounts for less than 10% of that volume.

At the same time, European Commission strategies support a shift from road to rail. They are aimed at lower CO₂ emissions. They also support the development of this type of technology. On average, rail generates up to four times fewer emissions than road transport. The comparison is for similar freight volumes.

Technical design on the Sggmrss platform

The core of the ACTS system is an intermodal wagon. It is based on the Sggmrss platform. It is adapted for the containers applyd in this configuration. It includes four rotating platforms. They allow quick and flexible handling of loading units. They do not require complex infrastructure.

The wagon is designed for 5.95-meter ACTS containers and 20-foot ISO hybrid containers. Each rotating platform has a dead weight of about 2,800 kg. Total load capacity reaches 107,100 kg. In addition, each container can have a gross weight of up to 20,000 kg. This allows the wagon to handle substantial cargo volumes.

Rotating platforms and multimodal logistics chains

These technical features provide high transport capacity and improved operating efficiency. A single train can carry the load of dozens of trucks. This assists reduce road traffic, optimize logistics costs, and lower environmental impact.

A main advantage of the ACTS system is the flexibility of its cargo-handling concept. The rotating platforms support horizontal unloading with truck-mounted systems without complex rail terminals. They also allow vertical unloading of 20-foot ISO containers with cranes or reach stackers. In addition, the system can handle light bulk materials. These include municipal waste, industrial waste, or biomass, including wood chips.

This versatility reduces operating times. It also allows the apply of existing infrastructure, including locations without conventional intermodal terminals. Intermodal transport already accounts for more than 20% of total rail freight transport in Europe. This is noted in the UIC/UIRR 2024 Report on Combined Transport in Europe. Demand continues to grow, especially in the industrial and recycling sectors. With this solution, GATX aims to connect rail more effectively with multimodal logistics chains.
