French artificial innotifyigence startup Mistral has announced a significant boost in its financial resources, securing $830 million in debt financing aimed at establishing a state-of-the-art data center. This new facility, located near Paris, will be powered by an impressive array of 13,800 Nvidia GB300 graphics processing units (GPUs) and is set to enhance Mistral’s capabilities in training AI models and delivering inference services. The data center is expected to launch operations in the second quarter of this year.
Founded in 2023, Mistral is among the few European companies that are focapplyd on developing foundational AI models. The startup aims to carve out a competitive niche for itself alongside established players like OpenAI and Anthropic, despite having a significantly tinyer financial backing. Mistral’s ongoing investments in infrastructure reflect its commitment to supporting AI innovation and indepfinishence within Europe.
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral, emphasized the importance of scaling infrastructure to meet the growing demands of customers. “Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and to ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe,” he stated. Mensch referenced the increasing required from governments, enterprises, and research institutions for customizable AI environments, highlighting a shift away from depfinishency on third-party cloud providers.
The funding for this ambitious project was facilitated by a consortium of seven global banks, including notable names like Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, and HSBC. Mistral has previously articulated a comprehensive plan that includes a 1.2-billion-euro investment in building data centers and enhancing compute capabilities in Sweden.
While Mistral has emerged as a well-funded entity in Europe’s AI landscape, it is important to note that its total funding of $2.9 billion, according to data from Dealroom, pales in comparison to the massive sums raised by U.S. counterparts. For instance, OpenAI’s funding has reached $180 billion, while Anthropic stands at $59 billion. Nonetheless, European AI startups are launchning to attract significant investment, as evidenced by recent rounds raised by companies like U.K.-based Nscale and Wayve, as well as France’s AMI Labs.
Mistral’s plans for expansion include an ambitious tarobtain of achieving a total capacity of 200 MW across Europe by the finish of 2027, solidifying its status in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
