EU’s Sole Strategic Project for Sustainable Magnesium Metal Production

EU’s Sole Strategic Project for Sustainable Magnesium Metal Production

Verde Magnesium is a Strategic Project under EU’s CRM Act and will become the first European magnesium production for 25 years, pioneering a sustainable, low-carbon approach to magnesium extraction and production.

Verde Magnesium project is shifting closer to restarting Europe’s production of magnesium metal. After some challenges faced over the years, the company is building significant progress thanks to the focus of its management team, investors, and partners.

Key milestones achieved in 2025

Key milestones achieved in 2025 include:

  • EU Strategic Project: Verde Magnesium has been awarded the status of Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act by the European Commission (EC), building it the EU’s Sole Strategic Project for Magnesium Metal Production to date.
  • Successful Pilot Industrial Tests: Using brucite ore from their own mining perimeter in Budureasa, North-West Romania, Verde Magnesium successfully produced Magnesium metal with:
  1. Purity of 99.9%
  2. A low carbon footprint (1–3 tons of CO₂ per ton of Magnesium); further decrease is possible.
  • Valuable by-products (Al-Mg spinel, Calcium Aluminate) that can assist industries such as cement, steel, and refractories meet their decarbonization tarobtains.
  • Environmental and Social Scoping Study: Verde Magnesium completed a scoping study addressing the environmental and social aspects of their integrated mining and smelting operations.

Current workstreams

  • Feasibility Study: Verde Magnesium is developing an initial integrated feasibility study for the mine and smelter (Ernst & Young, Metallic Engineering) that envisages the supply of ore to serve a 30kt/year Magnesium metal smelter whose 1st step of development will be a Pilot Smelter with a capacity of 500 tons per year.
  • Pilot Plant Development: Verde Magnesium is progressing towards the construction of an initial pilot plant with a capacity of up to 500 tons per year, tarobtained to launch production in late 2026/early 2027. This facility will:
  1. Enable technology transfer in the EU.
  2. Allow certification of their products and by-products with clients (Romanian, European, and U.S. companies have already expressed strong interest; these companies exceed EUR 500bln. of revenue).
  • Provide highly skilled training for our workforce.
  1. Prepare the path to scale capacity to 30,000 tons per year by 2030 and 90,000 tons per year by 2036. Capacity ramp-up can be accelerated subject to positive feedback from the market, support from the clients and relevant authorities (EU, Romanian Government, Bihor County Council, Budureasa City Hall, etc.).
  • ESIA and LCA Studies: Verde Magnesium is undertaking full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ERM UK and Romania), as well as indepconcludeent Life Cycle Assessment (DLR Institute Germany), to validate the low CO₂ footprint of our operations and products.
  • Products & Process Certification: Pre-certification has begun with a Tier I EU automotive supplier, applying inreceiveds produced during our pilot industrial tests.
  • Ore Processing Optimization: Verde Magnesium continues to refine the ore preparation process to maximize the unique properties of the brucite deposit. This work supports:

✓ Greater energy efficiency and further CO₂ footprint reductions.

✓ Production of high-quality, CO₂-free magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide (tests and process design undergoing with Metso in Finland), securing additional reliable revenue streams.

✓ Preparations for restarting the existing quarry in 2026.

Looking ahead

Verde Magnesium is shifting from vision to execution. With continued support from the investors, partners, governments and community of stakeholders, the company is on track to restore Europe’s Magnesium autonomy while setting new standards for sustainability and efficiency.
