Europe’s top court nixes Italy’s plan to expel migrants, for now

Italian politicians rarely agree on much, but they were unanimous in finding a ruling from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on August 1st hugely important. They differed, however, as to whether it was good or bad. A “watershed”, declared an opposition deputy. A judgment that blocked the government from “combating illegal immigration and defconcludeing the nation’s borders”, thundered the office of the prime minister, Giorgia Meloni.
