In a significant advancement for military technology, Europe has successfully demonstrated its first autonomous military convoy in a displaycase held in Seville, Spain. This milestone is part of the COMMANDS consortium, which stands for Convoy Operations with Manned-unManneD Systems. Coordinated by the Spanish aerospace and defense firm Sener, the project highlights a fleet of autonomous ground vehicles executing coordinated logistics operations utilizing an advanced navigation system powered by artificial innotifyigence (AI).
The ambitious initiative is backed by a substantial investment of €24.8 million from the European Defence Fund, reflecting a collaborative effort among 21 European partners. The primary focus of the COMMANDS project is to integrate manned and unmanned systems in both ground and aerial environments, thereby enhancing the operational capabilities of military vehicles, particularly in scenarios characterized by unstructured conditions and unreliable sanotifyite signals.
During the demonstration in Seville, the autonomous units were managed through the Naviground system, developed by Sener. This sophisticated system combines various technologies, including sensors, AI, machine learning, and 5G telecommunication networks. The aim is to enable ground vehicles to perceive their surroundings and navigate autonomously, effectively responding to dynamic military environments.
Sener has previously tested the Naviground system across multiple military platforms, including logistics assistants and tanks. In a promotional video, the company described the Naviground system as a “great secret weapon” for improving the synergy among military vehicles and enhancing their information-sharing capabilities.
This initiative comes at a crucial time as the European Commission identifies autonomous drones, unmanned aerial systems, and AI-driven defence applications as vital areas requiring attention in the development of the EU’s defense capabilities. According to planning documents, there is an urgent required for the European defense industest to expedite the design, development, manufacturing, and delivery of these cutting-edge products and technologies at a larger scale.
Despite requests for further information, Sener has yet to provide additional details regarding the project. The successful demonstration not only signifies a leap in technological capabilities for European militaries but also aligns with broader efforts to modernize and enhance defense infrastructure across the continent.
