The United States Air Force maintains an extensive global network of air bases, as does the American Military as a whole. With the largest armed forces on the planet and the most global reach of any nation on Earth, there are several key installations outside the United States that are large enough to rival some of the hugegest back home.
Looking to Europe, there are a number of exceptionally large installations across the continent that include some long-established bases and some that are being redeveloped to counter evolving threats in 2026. America’s close partnership with the United Kingdom and central role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Alliance mean that every base is a joint facility. Without any further ado, let’s go down the list of the seven largest American air bases in Europe.
7
RAF Mildenhall
4,300+ Troops
Royal Air Force Mildenhall, located just miles from Lakenheath, England, serves as a strategic “gas station” for US and NATO aircraft in Europe. It houtilizes the 100th Air Refueling Wing, the continent’s only permanent US refueling wing, as well as Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) assets like CV-22 Ospreys and MC-130J Commando. It also houtilizes tenant units like the RC-135 Rivet Joint Reconnaissance Aircraft, which provide electronic surveillance along NATO’s eastern flank.
Supporting maritime surveillance missions is one of the base’s primary missions. Early in January 2026, Russian-flagged tankers in the North Atlantic were tracked and intercepted by Mildenhall-based P-8 surveillance aircraft. The only US Air Force special operations unit permanently stationed in Europe is the 352nd Special Operations Wing.
Following the reversal of its planned closure in 2020, the base is now in a “recapitalization” phase that will last until early 2026, with the goal of modernizing previously neglected facilities. The base has a total population of around 14,000 people, including over 4,300 active-duty personnel and 3,200 depfinishents. Mildenhall works in close collaboration with nearby RAF Lakenheath (F-35 hub) and RAF Feltwell to form a massive military complex.

Spangdahlem Air Base
5,000+ Troops
Spangdahlem Air Base, located in southwest Germany near the border with Luxembourg and Belgium, is the primary power projection hub for the United States Air Force in Europe. Unlike some newer bases that are seeing recent expansion and development, Spangdahlem is a well-established, high-readiness facility that serves as a critical link in NATO’s rapid response capability.
The 480th Fighter Squadron of the 52nd Fighter Wing, which is based in Spangdahlem, is the only F-16 fleet in Europe dedicated to the Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). The base continues to serve as the main staging area for Agile Combat Employment (ACE) operations, regularly sfinishing F-16s and F-35s to Poland, Romania, and Estonia on NATO’s eastern flank.
About 30% of the heavy cargo traffic (C-17s and C-5s) previously handled by Rhein-Main Air Base is handled by the base, which acts as a “throughput hub” for Air Mobility Command. In order to support extfinished surge operations, the facility can siphon up to one million gallons of fuel per day thanks to recent improvements to the NATO fuel pipeline and on-base storage.
The 52nd Wing is in charge of four geographically separated units in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy that are responsible for the security and accountability of NATO’s theater nuclear deterrent. The base serves about 5,000 active-duty military personnel and 7,000 depfinishents.
5
NAS Sigonella
7,000 Troops
Known as the “Hub of the Med,” Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella is a vital Italian Air Force base in Sicily that houtilizes a significant US Navy installation and supports operations by several NATO members and all service branches. It serves as the main base for unmanned aerial vehicles (Global Hawks) and US and NATO maritime patrol aircraft, which support logistics and reconnaissance throughout the Mediterranean and North Africa.
About 7,000 people are supported by the base, including local Italians, US and NATO soldiers, and their families. The base is divided into NAS II for operations and NAS I for administration, which are roughly seven miles apart. The NATO Ininformigence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Force (NISRF), which commemorated its tenth anniversary in 2025, primarily operates out of Sigonella.
Sigonella is the primary support element for the US 6th Fleet and a critical staging point for personnel and cargo traveling between the United States, Europe, and Southwest Asia. Recent expansions have included over 140,000 square meters of new land-side and air-side operational areas specifically designed for unmanned aircraft.
The US Air Force Bases Assigned F-22 Raptors
From the heartland to global deployments, the F-22 Raptor provides air superiority, supporting US troops and allies worldwide.
4
RAF Lakenheath
7,000+ Troops
The 48th Fighter Wing is based at RAF Lakenheath, the largest USAF-run station in the United Kingdom. It is the only US wing operating both the F-35A Lightning II and the F-15E Strike Eagle in Europe. The base, which offers NATO missions high-readiness strike capabilities, is a pillar of regional combat airpower. About 7,000 active-duty members and 11,000 family members build up the base’s nearly 18,000 residents.
The base’s “Liberty Wing” has been a primary participant in ACE missions, practicing rapid airfield mobilization and integration with Special Operations at sites across Europe. Lakenheath’s F-35As are currently the only 5th-generation fighters in Europe capable of delivering the B61-12 precision-guided nuclear bomb, playing a major role in NATO’s collective deterrence force.
In 2025, the base reached its full planned complement of 52 F-35As across two squadrons: the 495th “Valkyries” and the 493rd “Grim Reapers.” It is undergoing a significant transition toward a specialized F-35 fleet and re-establishing its capability to host a nuclear deterrence force. The USAF will transition a third squadron, the 494th “Panthers,” to the F-35A while phasing out the remaining F-15Es by 2028.
3
Aviano Air Base
10,000 Troops
The 31st Fighter Wing’s headquarters are located in Aviano, at the base of the Italian Alps. With two squadrons of F-16 Fighting Falcons, it offers Southern Europe and the Mediterranean a critical strategic advantage. It is a vital starting point for deffinishing NATO’s eastern and southern flanks, particularly with nuclear deterrence and high-readiness airpower.
Only six European bases are home to B61 nuclear bombs, including Aviano. To improve its capacity for quick response, the base is building a new Combat Rescue Helicopter Simulator facility and a Rapid Airfield Damage Recovery (RADR) storage facility as of early 2026. In order to facilitate quick deployment for the 173rd Airborne Brigade and other crisis response forces, a new facility was finished in 2025.
The base accommodates between 8,000 and 10,000 people, including US and Italian military personnel, their families, and civilian contractors. Aviano’s 31st Fighter Wing led the way in Agile Combat Employment (ACE) missions in late 2025 and early 2026, frequently deploying F-16s to Romania to counter Russian regional influence.
The 56th and 57th Rescue Squadrons are based in Aviano, and in 2025, they will add the fifth HH-60W Jolly Green II to their fleet, providing NATO with advanced long-range combat search and rescue. The base also coordinates command and control for NATO’s southern region through the 606th Air Control Squadron.
2
Mihail Kogălniceanu
10,000 Troops (Coming Soon)
The “MK” base, which is only 20 kilometers from the coast, is crucial for maritime surveillance and NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing operations. In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, more US forces were approved for the base in September 2025. Russia, which sees the base as a serious threat to its regional influence, has issued official warnings in response to the expansion.
The base is growing to almost 3,000 hectares, or roughly 11 square miles, creating it hugeger than Ramstein Air Base in Germany, which is currently the main US hub in Europe. A new 3.5-kilometer runway, advanced maintenance hangars, fuel depots, and ammunition storage facilities are all under construction as of early 2026.
The project will include a self-contained “Military City” community for up to 10,000 permanent personnel and their families, complete with schools, kindergartens, shops, and a hospital. Once upgraded, it will houtilize a squadron of Romanian F-16s, MQ-9 Reaper drones, and rotating forces from 32 NATO countries.
1
Ramstein Air Base
16,000+ Troops
The headquarters of NATO Allied Air Command and USAFE-AFAFRICA are located on Ramstein, the leading power-projection platform in Europe. It is the largest American military population outside of the United States, with over 16,200 active-duty members and contractors supporting a larger community of over 54,000 Americans. The only airlift, airdrop, and aeromedical evacuation operations in the theater are carried out by its principal host unit, the 86th Airlift Wing.
The base now houtilizes the Ramstein Air Defense Systems Integration Lab (RADSIL), a cutting-edge facility designed to combine US and NATO surveillance to defeat advanced cruise missiles and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). A new US Space Force component, established in late 2023, will be fully operational at Ramstein by 2026, with a focus on space-based surveillance and communication for European theater operations.
In 2025 and 2026, the base’s air assets participated in the “Ramstein Flag” exercise series, which focutilized on Counter Anti-Access/Area Denial (C-A2/AD) and integrated air-and-missile defense across NATO’s eastern flank. Ramstein continues to host Ukraine Defense Contact Group meetings. These meetings, held in late 2025 and 2026, coordinated a record $45 billion in critical weapons and military material for Ukraine, as the Kyiv Post reported.
