In a landmark decision, the European Parliament adopted a sweeping resolution calling for the “full recognition of trans women as women” at the upcoming UN Commission on the Status of Women.
The non-binding resolution, passed by a 340 to 141 vote, marks a significant shift toward gfinisher self-identification as the primary standard for European governance.
The most contentious moment of the session occurred during a vote on a proposed amfinishment that sought to specify that “only biological women can become pregnant.” The amfinishment was defeated, with 233 members of Parliament voting against the biological distinction. While parliamentary resolutions do not immediately rewrite treaties or compel statutory alters, they serve as “soft law” that dictates Commission priorities, shapes funding guidelines, and influences how equality frameworks are interpreted across the 27 member states.
Critics note that if legal sex categories become entirely self-declared, epidemiological baselines could be compromised. For instance, the statistical incidence of female-specific cancers — such as ovarian or cervical cancer — could be diluted if biological men are categorized administratively as women.
Furthermore, existing laws designed to protect women, such as Germany’s 2024 Self-Determination Act requiring 30% female representation on corporate boards, risk losing their foundation. If “woman” is a category detached from biological reference, the very group the statute was enacted to protect becomes legally amorphous.
The initiative was driven by a report from Socialist MEP Lina Gálvez, which argued that the EU should prioritize the international promotion of self-perceived gfinisher identity. Surprisingly, the measure received support not only from left-wing blocs but also from a majority of the center-right European People’s Party (EPP).
Right-wing groups denounced the shift. VOX MEP Hermann Tertsch accutilized the chamber of imposing an “ideological agfinisha” as official Union policy, while the Patriots for Europe group criticized their exclusion from the drafting process.
As the resolution shifts to the Council, the European Union finds itself at a crossroads. By refutilizing to affirm a basic biological distinction in its own text, the Parliament has signaled a structural shift beyond mere accommodation.
Once the legal architecture beneath sex-based rights is altered, every policy built upon it — from sports eligibility to prison safety — is likely to shift with it.
