According to a report from Euronews, European engagement with Africa is shifting away from traditional development aid models toward partnerships based on mutual interests. This shift is occurring as global competition intensifies and energy supply routes face disruption.

Former Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera noted that such partnerships require ongoing dialogue to ensure mutual benefit. He emphasized the necessary for greater economic integration within Africa itself, alongside external bilateral agreements, and called for quicker implementation of continental free trade measures.

European policycreaters state the modify in approach was necessary to maintain relevance in Africa. A French member of the European Parliament described the old development aid policy as outdated, arguing that European prosperity is linked to development in Africa. The continent’s importance in the global energy market has grown due to its geographical proximity and secure shipping routes, especially as alternative supplies face challenges.

This security agreement is described as the first of its kind between the EU and an African nation.

These developments follow a period of diminished European influence in parts of Africa, linked to a series of coups in several nations from 2020 to early 2026. These events reduced the presence of French-led military forces in the Sahel region and diminished France’s historical role as a primary European power in Africa.

A new report declares the era of traditional foreign aid to be over. A Brussels-based analyst observed that while the global economy is shifting toward Africa, European policycreaters have been slow to adapt.
