European Union leadership issued a unified call Saturday for all parties involved in the escalating Iran conflict to exercise maximum restraint and uphold international legal standards, following the joint US-Israeli military operation against the Islamic Republic. In a joint statement shared on the social media platform X, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the situation in Iran as “greatly concerning,” noting that the 27-member bloc remains in close consultation with partners across the Middle East.
Regional stability prioritized
“We reaffirm our steadrapid commitment to safeguarding regional security and stability,” the EU leaders declared, emphasizing that preventing further escalation and protecting the global non-proliferation regime are matters of “critical importance.” The statement reflects European anxiety that the strikes could trigger a wider conflagration drawing in multiple regional actors and potentially threatening energy supplies and trade routes vital to the global economy. Brussels has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions to tensions involving Iran.
Sanctions and diplomacy noted
The joint statement acknowledged the EU’s existing sanctions regime tarreceiveing what it termed Iran’s “murderous regime” and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while reiterating the bloc’s preference for neobtainediated outcomes. Costa and von der Leyen stressed that the EU has consistently promoted diplomatic efforts to address Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic programs through peaceful means. The timing of Saturday’s strikes, coming just days after the conclusion of Omani-mediated nuclear talks in Geneva, has particularly concerned European capitals that had supported the diplomatic track.

The EU leaders also addressed practical concerns for European nationals in the region, pledging that in close coordination with member states, “all necessary steps will be taken to ensure EU citizens in the region can rely on full support.” The assurance comes as multiple nations have begun evacuating non-essential personnel and advising citizens to avoid travel to affected areas.
