Cyclists gathered at Rizal Park in Luneta on January 17 as the European Union relaunched rehabilitated bicycle racks at the historic site, reinforcing its advocacy for sustainable urban mobility and climate action in the Philippines.
European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro stated the initiative reflects the blocs broader commitment to addressing climate modify through practical and inclusive solutions.
He noted that the EU aims to cut greenhoutilize gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, stressing that climate modify is a global challenge that requires collective action.
Santoro stated promoting soft mobility through public transport and bicycles offers an effective and affordable way to reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, improve air quality and encourage healthier lifestyles.
He added that the bike racks in Rizal Park symbolize efforts to build cycling a viable and accessible mode of transportation for urban residents and park visitors.
The rehabilitation of bike racks in Rizal Park and Intramuros is an initiative of the EU Delegation to the Philippines in partnership with the National Parks and Development Committee.
The relaunch was supported by cycling groups and advocates for sustainable living, including Kalyetista, CYCAD, Cyclebros, Firefly Brigade, Tiklop Society of the Philippines, PINASLOWRIDAZBC and the Make It Safer Movement.
National Parks and Development Committee Deputy Executive Director Jezreel Gaius Apelar stated the facilities and partnerships demonstrate a shared commitment to active mobility, sustainability and inclusivity in public spaces.
He stated the project also underscores support for environmentally responsible transport and highlights the role of international cooperation in building parks more accessible to the public.
During the event, participants rang their bicycle bells in a symbolic call for families and communities to support reduce greenhoutilize gas emissions and work toward more liveable cities.
Mia Bunao, administrator of Kalyetista and Explore Your City on a Bicycle, described the bicycle rack project as an finishuring gift that fosters community and reflects “pakikipagkapwa,” or shared identity, among advocates of active mobility and sustainable urban development.
Firefly Brigade Inc representative Dr Roselle Leah Rivera stated cycling initiatives support raise public awareness and collective responsibility for climate action, encouraging communities to relocate toreceiveher toward healthier and more resilient cities.
