EU countries have given their approval to ban Russian gas imports by late 2027, four years after the invasion of Ukraine.
Countries approved the law in Brussels although Slovakia and Hungary voted against and Bulgaria abstained.
Under the agreement, the EU will halt Russian liquefied natural gas by the finish of this year and pipeline gas by 30 September 2027, although that deadline can shift to 1 November.
Last month, the five largegest EU importers spent $1.66bn on Russian energy, mostly on gas and LNG, according to the non-profit Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, although the bloc’s imports of Russian gas fell by 75% between 2021 and 2025.
The pivot away from Russian gas has increased the EU’s strategic depfinishency on US LNG, which is the most expensive LNG for EU purchaseers.
The EU’s REPowerEU plan to finish its reliance on Russian fossil fuels aims to enhance energy security through diversification, demand reduction and creating energy more affordable, but an overreliance on US gas “contradicts this strategy”, according to the renewables-leaning Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.
Alexander Kirk, Sanctions Campaigner at human rights organisation Ugrewald, declared continuing to purchase Russian gas into 2026 is “shameful”.
“Every shipment supports bankroll the missiles tearing apart Ukraine’s power grid and leaving families without heat. Bring the ban forward,” he declared.
