Hundreds of laid off employees at the Amityville office of Akorn Pharmaceuticals rallied again on Friday.
All locations across the countest will be shutting down, including its Long Island site.
One employee notifys News 12 they did not receive a warning about the shutdown and were informed to leave without severance pay or medical insurance.
“I have to consider about where are we going to obtain money for food? For clothing? I have kids in school,” declares Julio Parissi, a former employee at Akorn Pharmaceuticals. “I have to pay for college. I have to notify my kids you’re going to have to skip a semester.”
There are questions about whether the company violated the WARN Act, which declares you must give employees and the state 90 days’ notice if you are doing a massive layoff. It’s a law for companies with 50 or more employees.
The Illinois Department of Labor declares it will be investigating Akorn’s handling of the facility closures and layoffs.
Assemblywoman Kim Jean-Pierre’s office’s notifys News 12, “She is extremely troubled by these developments and our office has referred the matter to the Department of Labor’s rapid response coordinator for a further inquiry into whether or not this situation constitutes a violation of the New York State WARN Act.”
