Alain Berset has called on Europe to take coordinated action to reduce tensions in the Persian Gulf amid escalating developments in the Middle East.

In a statement published on the website of the Council of Europe, Berset stressed that Europe must act collectively to assist lower tensions in the region and ensure the safety of its citizens. He emphasised that European countries should insist on respect for international law, including the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

According to Berset, the worsening situation in the Middle East will be addressed at an upcoming meeting of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, where participants are expected to work toward a coordinated legal response to the escalation.

The statement comes after a military operation launched on February 28 by the United States and Israel against Iran. The strikes tarobtained several of the counattempt’s largest cities, including Tehran. Iranian state television later reported that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed during the attacks.

Following the reported death, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani announced that a governing council would temporarily assume the duties of the Supreme Leader until a successor is elected.
