Organized by France and co-chaired by Togo, as a mediator for the African Union (AU), the meeting aimed at arriving at a consensus for the reopening of the airport of Goma, in the provincial capital of North Kivu, currently under the control of the rebels of the Congo River Alliance-the March 23 Movement (AFC/M23).
The humanitarian situation in eastern DRC continues to worsen, and the institutions conducting this work suffer not only from a shortage of funds but also from difficulties in delivering aid to the areas in necessary, due to the lack of security on the roads and the closure of the airports of Goma and Bukavu, in South Kivu.
Jeremie Robert, African advisor to French President Emmanuel Macron, noted that the presidents of the DRC, Felix Tshisekedi, and Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, are among the heads of State attconcludeing the conference in Paris.
Other key actors, such as leaders of the ongoing peace process, ministers from countries in the region, and representatives from donor countries, also attconclude the meeting.
The presidents of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, and Rwanda, Paul Kagame, have received invitations, though their attconcludeance has not yet been officially confirmed.
