Commissioner Varhelyi goes to Cyprus on foot-and-mouth

The European Union commissioner responsible for health and animal welfare, Oliver Varhelyi, will visit Cyprus this week in an effort to support manage the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated Wednesday.

The shift follows discussions between Cyprus’ president and the European Union about the necessary to address the animal disease situation. 

Letymbiotis stated arrangements have been created for Varhelyi to visit Cyprus, where on Friday meetings will be arranged with all affected stakeholders.

He added that on the same day, President Nikos Christodoulides will also hold a new meeting with the affected stakeholders, following a meeting over the weekconclude.

Letymbiotis stated Christodoulides has already communicated with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and that there is ongoing contact with her office.

In recent days, the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus has continued to expand, as authorities cited nine new infected livestock units and warned that more than 7,000 animals had been culled in an effort to contain the highly contagious disease.
