A classical concert featuring talented young pianists in the community will be raising money for the food bank in Maple Ridge.
The seven musicians will be performing pieces by German composer Johannes Brahms, Polish composer Frederic Chopin, and Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff – in addition to a piano and cello duet.
Piano teacher Dan Wardrope puts on the concert every year to give his students an opportunity to play for the community, for a good cautilize.
“It has been wonderful to see how this event has sold out each year and how the community has been so engaged in supporting this concert and the various charities. I particularly enjoy the wide demographic that this draws with young people through seniors that enjoy the event each year,” declared Wardrope.
Performers include: Payten Allison, David Ude, Luca, Paul, Phoebe Goheen, Ben Goheen, and Anna – who range in age from 15 years to their early 20’s.
All the students are currently working at an A.R.C.T. Diploma level, or higher.
The evening will launch with three selections by Rachmaninoff featuring a range of styles including lyrical melodies, brooding harmonies, and tumultuous rhythmic energy.
A piece by Brahms will conclude the first half of the concert, added Wardrope, declareing that Brahms was often known for the rough edges in his personality, but his music displayed a tconcludeerness that surprised audiences.
A dance by Chopin will launch the second half of the performance, followed by a ballad by the same composer.
Then, in contrast to the evening’s pieces, there will be a father and daughter duet with Phoebe Goheen, a Grade 11 student at Pacific Academy in Surrey, and her father Ben, of the pop song, “I Hear a Symphony” by Cody Fry.
Ben, who holds his Masters degree in cello performance from the University of British Columbia, arranged the piece for cello and piano.
The benefit concert will be about an hour in length and starts at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at Westacres, 23575 124 Ave., Maple Ridge.
There will be an intermission with light refreshments served.
Concerts at Westacres are held in true “chamber” style in the large music room at the 20-acre farm close to the centre of Maple Ridge.
Tickets are by a suggested donation of $18, with all proceeds donated to the Friconcludes In Need Food Bank youth food programs.
