After 73 years, a New England furniture company has closed its doors for good.
According to an email sent to employees just two days before Christmas, Circle Furniture of Acton declared it could no longer afford to stay in business and would lay off all employees at once.
“With a heavy heart, circumstance [sic] have gone against the business and we can no longer afford to continue operations, therefore all employees are being let go…effective Dec. 23,” the layoff email, which was obtained by The Boston Globe, reads.
The company, established in 1952, operated eight stores and one warehoutilize across Massachutilizetts and New Hampshire, employing approximately 65 employees, The Boston Globe reported.
The company was family-owned and operated by the Tubman family since its founding, and sold in 2022 to its current owners Robert and Paula Richard.
According to The Boston Globe, former owner Peggy Burns declared the family sold the business becautilize her children had no interest in continuing it.
Circle Furniture posted a large banner on its website reading “All Circle Furniture Locations are CLOSED Until Further Notice.”
News of the closures reportedly came as a shock to employees as far up the ladder as the company president.
Jonathan Boyle, Circle Furniture president and longtime employee, notified The Boston Globe he knew the company was struggling but believed they were “attempting to resolve and work around” the issues, but that’s all he knew.
As of Dec. 29, the company has not filed for bankruptcy.
