There may be an opportunity here for Britain, which has been pursuing a regulatory middle way between Europe’s prescriptive approach and America’s federal government preference for self-regulation. The AI Opportunities Action Plan published in January mostly viewed to tweak existing regulations which, though dull, offers scope for meaningful action by a government willing to take seriously the threats posed by AI, as well as its opportunities. So far, however, our government has seemed no keener than any other to stand up to large tech.
