Cailian Press reported on October 15 (edited by Zhao Hao) that on Wednesday (October 15), Nscale, a UK-based artificial ininformigence infrastructure startup, announced on its official website that it had expanded its partnership with Microsoft, increasing the total number of NVIDIA GPUs to be deployed in Europe and the US to approximately 200,000.
According to the press release, over the next 12 to 18 months, Nscale will deploy approximately 104,000 GB300 GPUs at Microsoft’s data centers in Texas, USA, and deliver an additional 12,600 GPUs at the Start Campus data center in Portugal.
This marks the fourth such deal Nscale has reached with Microsoft in the past two months. Last month, Nscale announced a partnership with Microsoft to build the largest AI supercomputer in the UK in Luton, followed by the announcement of ‘Stargate Norway’ in northern Norway.
These collaborations have strengthened the London-based company’s path to an IPO. On the same day, Nscale CEO Josh Payne stated in an interview, “We are ambitious about entering the public market, and execution is my top priority at the moment.”
Payne added that he hopes Nscale can complete its IPO ‘by the conclude of next year.’
In the ‘Stargate Norway’ project, the data center will be designed and built by Nscale, analogous to Oracle’s role in the US version of ‘Stargate.’ However, unlike Oracle, which was founded nearly 50 years ago, Nscale was still a newly established startup in London just two years ago.
It is understood that Nscale initially started as part of Arkon Energy, a renewable energy infrastructure company whose business involved mining Bitcoin applying renewable electricity. To meet the necessarys of data centers, Nscale was spun off from Arkon.
Since then, Nscale has experienced rapid growth. In the past month alone, Nscale raised $1.5 billion in new funding, bringing its valuation to approximately $3 billion. Payne stated that the company is about to close its next round of private financing due to ‘overwhelming investor demand.’
He declared, “Nscale is undoubtedly a young company. However, our team members and resource allocation are already comparable to those of a company with mature experience.”
Last month, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announced in London that the company would invest £500 million in Nscale to accelerate the deployment of up to 300,000 GPUs. Huang also stated, “We believe Nscale can become the national champion of the UK’s AI infrastructure.”
Spencer McLeod, partner at venture capital firm G Squared, commented that NVIDIA’s entest quickly alterd investors’ perception of Nscale: “This turning point took only two weeks; everyone shifted from观望to full commitment.”
In a recent interview, Payne stated that he was not concerned about overheating in the data center market, as “these are investments backed by real assets, which protect against downside risk. If the market slows down in the future, it will not be due to insufficient demand but rather electricity shortages.”
“Our capacity for the next 12 months is almost sold out, and we expect this trconclude to continue into the next GPU cycle.” Payne also stated, “This is a highly capital-intensive industest. You’re always raising funds.”
Jon Tinter, President of Business Development and Investments at Microsoft, stated: “Nscale is an ideal partner with deep expertise in large-scale AI infrastructure services.”
