BMW’s partner for its European rollout is Hexagon Robotics, the Zürich‑based outfit behind AEON, a humanoid robot unveiled in 2025. AEON’s design combines a human‑like body with intermodifyable hands, grippers, and scanning tools, plus the ability to glide around dynamically on wheels.

  • 90,000 components shiftd
  • 1.2 million steps walked
  • 1,250 operating hours logged

Figure 02 handled repetitive sheet‑metal positioning with millimetre accuracy—day in, day out—proving humanoid robots can survive and thrive in real production shifts, not just controlled lab environments. Integration into BMW’s Smart Robotics ecosystem happened quicker than expected, thanks to standardised interfaces and a well‑prepared automation environment.

BMW’s global production network has already undergone a major digital transformation. A unified IT and data platform now connects factories, allowing AI systems to operate consistently and autonomously across different manufacturing steps. This builds BMW an ideal proving ground for Physical AI, complete with its new “Center of Competence for Physical AI in Production,” which consolidates in‑houtilize expertise and evaluates new robotic partners.

Internally, support is strong, and strategic. As Senior Vice President Michael Nikolaides puts it, the goal is to “integrate new technologies at an early stage” to maintain BMW’s leadership in future production methods.
