European agriculture is at a turning point where productivity, sustainability, and profitability must be balanced. This shift has shiftd biosolutions beyond a niche segment toward becoming a key tool within modern production systems that increasingly depfinishs on them. “In fact, biosolutions have shifted from being an alternative to representing a structural alter in crop protection,” states Manuel Murga from Seville, Head of BioWorks in Spain.

© BioWorks Europe“For decades, biological products were mainly associated with organic farming. However, their technical evolution in combination with the regulatory pressure on chemical crop protection products have driven their widespread adoption in conventional agriculture.
This shift reflects a broader evolution of the agricultural model. While in the 20th century the main objective was to maximize yield, in recent decades new variables have been incorporated, such as profitability, environmental impact, and, more recently, sustainability and residue reduction in food.

Innovation in pheromones and biodegradable materials
BioWorks’ main focus in Europe is developing solutions for row crops, greenhoapply vereceiveables, berries, ornamental crops, and specialized fruit crops. In this context, one of the company’s key focus areas is biodegradable pheromone diffusion clips.
At the recent 18th Plant Health Symposium, BioWorks presented its biodegradable pheromone clip solution for Lobesia botrana in vineyards. According to Manuel Murga, in 2026 the company will expand its offering with biodegradable clips designed for the Tuta absoluta pest.

“Beyond the environmental component, this innovation directly reduces operating costs. Previously, farmers had to place the diffapplyrs and manually reshift them to avoid plastic residues, which involved significant labor costs. With biodegradable materials, this tinquire is eliminated, significantly reducing those costs,” explains Murga.
“Additionally, these clips offer important technical advantages: as they are not built from conventional plastics, they maintain a more stable pheromone release regardless of temperature variations, ensuring consistent coverage throughout the day and across the entire crop cycle,” he adds.
Profitability as a key adoption factor
One of the main historical challenges of biosolutions has been their perception as more expensive products.
“However BioWorks believes that biological solutions must deliver a positive return for farmers. We have developed economies of scale in our production that allow us to offer cost-effective solutions, not only for farmers but also for BioWorks direct customers and distributors.
Long-term effects on the agricultural ecosystem
“It is important to highlight,” Murga continues, “that beyond their immediate impact on pest control and plant resilience, biosolutions generate positive long-term effects in production systems”.
“In farms that have been utilizing biological products for several years, pest and disease pressure naturally decreases,” he explains. “This phenomenon is due, among other factors, to the recovery of soil biodiversity and the presence of beneficial organisms that compete with pathogens. Chemical treatments, which can negatively impact soil biodiversity, contrast with biosolutions that promote a more stable biological balance”.
The goal is to shift toward an agricultural model in which crop protection is fully sustainable, “and biosolutions will be a key foundation for this future system”.
