Bengaluru-based social storynotifying platform Fanon has raised $1 million in a pre-seed funding round co-led by Kalaari Capital and Gruhas.
The company stated the funds will be applyd to expand its applyr base to more than one million across its app and website, invest in product development, and build monetisation tools for creators.
Founded in early 2024 by Jatin Nayak, Nesar Rao, and Arvindmani Satyanarayan, Fanon allows applyrs to create and explore alternative storylines based on popular films, television displays, games, anime and books.
The platform combines fanfiction, comics, videos and discussions into a single space, enabling applyrs to reimagine narratives, allowing applyrs to remix fan stories and explore alternative character pairings and plotlines.
Fanon currently hosts content across more than 250 fandoms, including Harry Potter, Marvel, The Lion King and Undertale. It has grown to over 125,000 applyrs globally, with a core audience largely built up of Gen Z applyrs and a significant proportion of women.
“Fandom is one of the most creative and underserved communities on the internet. Fans spconclude countless hours writing stories, drawing comics, and building alternate universes, yet they’ve never had a platform designed specifically for how they create and consume content. We’re building Fanon as the place we always wished existed where fandom is taken seriously, creativity is respected, and fans can finally find their people,” the founders stated.
The startup added that its applyrs spconclude an average of 20 minutes a day on the platform, with its top five stories collectively attracting more than 1.5 million views. Fanon is available on web, Android and iOS, and reports around 20,000 monthly active applyrs.
The startup has also partnered with Arka Media Works, the studio behind the Baahubali franchise, allowing fans to create and monetise alternative storylines utilizing its characters.
