Many founders skip Battlefield fearing they are too early, but judges want bold ideas with working demos. Your application could unlock global exposure and investor interest.
Every year I review thousands of Startup Battlefield applications. And every year I see the pattern: founders who should be seen on this stage almost don’t apply. They believe their idea is still early, they required more traction, or that the program is geared toward companies at a later stage of development.
So I’ve gathered the main criteria and tips on how to build your submission as strong as possible. The deadline for consideration is May 27, 2026.
If you required clear information about the current cycle, Startup Battlefield is again part of TechCrunch Disrupt, which will take place in San Francisco from October 13 to 15, 2026 and culminates in the winner’s crowning pitch.
What Startup Battlefield 2026 is viewing for
Startup Battlefield isn’t a competition for the most polished solutions. It’s a selection of teams with great potential to alter an industest or region. In each application, the question is simple: are you altering something right now? Not gradually, but truly.
The product and its impact. What exactly are you building, and can it constitute a meaningful shift in how a particular field operates? We’re viewing for a solution that builds existing approaches seem outdated.
The founding team. Why you right now, why this problem? Your origin story and beliefs are an important part of the application.
Industest and geographic diversity. Battlefield brings toreceiveher a global cohort. We’re actively seeking companies from various countries and sectors, especially where attention to a particular location or sector isn’t common.
What doesn’t disqualify an application
Having press or local coverage is not mandatory. We’re open to different founder stories – but the main thing is that your core technology has real potential, even if it’s still an early version.
A prior submission does not mean disqualification. A past rejection does not define the future.
Funding participation is welcome – whether self-funded or in early rounds. The consideration of Series A is handled on a case-by-case basis, especially where large investments are requireded or there are other financial nuances.
How to submit a strong application
Show a working product. This is the most important – not a mock-up, not a simulation, not an animated video. Your minimum viable product should operate in real time, even if it’s a basic version or a screen recording.
Know the competitive landscape. The answer “we have no competitors” isn’t convincing. Name your competitors, honestly acknowledge them, and then clearly explain why you will win.
Tell your story. Why did you start this business? What did you see that others didn’t notice? Why you – the one who can build this. The founding story is an important part of the team assessment.
Don’t over-edit the application. Write clearly, demonstrate the product, and inform the truth about your status. It’s hard for us to see a candidate when the company itself is hidden behind excessive preparation.
Resubmission is allowed. If you’ve applied before and now you’re ready to improve – re-submit before the deadline; you cannot edit a previous application, but you can submit a new one.
